Born and raised in upstate New York, Tanya found her way into the world of holistic health and indigenous healing in the midst of several years of New York City living, a hectic career in television journalism and a serious need for balance.

A few years post the World Trade Center attacks, she packed her bags, headed west and never looked back. She attended Bauman College of Holistic Nutrition & Culinary Arts, located in Berkeley, CA, in 2005 and 2007 where she earned her certifications as Nutrition Educator & Nutrition Consultant.

In no time at all– the place, the people, and the plants grew on her. As a part-time, nutrition-based cooking instructor for the Berkeley Unified School District, her love for plants- as both food and medicine- has been her driving force in raising awareness around healthy food and lifestyle choices as well as finding ways to incorporate herbs into the diet both preventatively and medicinally. It became clear that delving into the way of the plants was the next leg of her journey.

While Tanya’s interests in nutrition are focused around digestive wellness, food allergies and seasonal cleansing— she is gravitating towards women’s reproductive health in herbal studies.

Tanya can often be found dancing, reading an inspirational book, hiking, doing hot yoga or creating herbal medicine in her spare time.

Raised on the shores of Lake Erie, I have been strongly influenced by the images of urban decay which abound in the Rust Belt. The beauty and gentle tenacity of little green plants poking through brick and concrete are beautifully symbolic of the dreams I have for myself, and for our society. A return to green, a return to life. The promise that there are no true ruins in this world.

My parents instilled in me a curiosity about the world and a respect for all living things. I watched our neighbors bringing their cuts, splinters, or other health concerns to my mother, a nurse, for tending and advice. It was during a period of illness that I was called back to these values in order to help myself get well. It was by noticing those little green plants growing up through the ruin of me that I began to heal, and it was a result of my own healing that I realized that I wanted to help other people to heal themselves, too. This decision led me here to the beautiful Ohlone Center, where I continue to learn, grow, heal, and appreciate all.

I believe in empowering people to heal themselves by encouraging individuals to
take an active role in their healing process. Often, this includes evaluating changes that
may need to be made physically, mentally, and emotionally. I believe that an individual
working toward health and harmony is in turn healing a part of their community, and thus
providing a large-scale remedy to better our planet. The Earth is changing in radical
ways, and with that, our definition of medicine is also changing. Healing is a journey,
and I strive to provide a bridge between my clients and the healing realm of plants. My
educational background is varied and vast: In addition to being a Certified Western
Herbalist, I received a Bachelor of Arts from Goddard College in Vermont, with a focus
on ecopsychology. I call Illinois and New Mexico home. I feel blessed to have been able
to spend an equal amount of time in my youth pounding pavement; hiking mountain
meadows; and even floating down the Mississippi River so quietly that I swear I heard
the trees sing.

As a Latina growing up in East Oakland, Tina’s career mission has always been to serve her community. This led her to earn her undergraduate degree in Psychology and to her Masters work in Educational Psychology. After working in the field of Social Services for nearly twenty years, Tina decided to make a career shift and pursue a lifelong interest in the field of Herbal Medicine. This brought her to the Ohlone Herbal Center. For Tina, the practice of Herbal Medicine has brought many rewards, including an opportunity to continue to serve her community, as well as to connect with her Latina roots in the work with healing herbs. Her goal is to eventually return to the Latino community in a community health center, providing a complimentary healing alternative.

I hail from the brown deciduous woods of New York and the Evergreen forests of the Pacific Northwest, and the sweet, stirring smell of Eucalyptus was something I had never experienced before. Although I love my trees from my various homes, the eucalyptus was something that was so intoxicating, so bewitching to my spirit, that I knew I would have to spend some time getting to know this area of the world. I became an herbalist through my own healing crisis as well as a frustration with the loss of ancestral wisdom and privatization of health care in this country. I was no longer willing to be disassociated with my body and this earth. I don’t believe that health comes from sterile doctor’s offices, instead I believe in the magic and healing that comes out of our own kitchens and homes. I have always welcomed folks into my kitchen. It’s a place where we can cook community dinners, enjoy the practical magic of fir tip and wild strawberry leaf tea, or to just sit on the floor while sharing space and telling stories, whether they are painful or pleasant. These are practices that nourish myself as well as my community and I am dedicated to encourage others to empower themselves by taking care of themselves! When I’m not working at the lovely Ohlone Clinic, I spend a lot of my time harvesting plants, infusing medicinal honeys, laying down on the forest floor, making flower essences, reading about and connecting to ancient folklore and magical practices and striving to maintain seasonal balance within myself. Let’s continue to take good care of ourselves!

This creative energy led Syslee to find
her own art through nature. Growing up in rural Southern Oregon she spent her childhood
at her mother’s side roaming the riversides and seashores collecting dogwood, willow,
and sea kelp used to make furniture and baskets. Early on Syslee felt at home in this
environment.

A passion for cooking and wild foods led Syslee to Portland, Or. where she attended
culinary school. The desire to educate and share the wild bounty of foraged foods with
her community led her to open, Table, a supper club. While expanding her knowledge of
wild plants she discovered that not only did these plants serve as an excellent source of
nutritious food but that they contained great healing properties. This realization unearthed
the world of holistic healthcare and plant medicine. She quickly realized that healing with
plants and food was indeed her true passion.

In the spring of 2012 Syslee packed her car and headed south for California where she
began her studies at Ohlone Herbal Center. Now most spare moments are spent roaming
the near by woods learning from the plants and gather ingredients for the next shared
supper. Currently, Syslee is seeing clients at Ohlone’s Clinic, and developing a holistic
food product line.

She first worked as an ER/trauma nurse in Chicago and then moved into public health 5 years ago. She now works with people who are homeless/marginally housed and have multiple complex medical, psychological and substance abuse issues compounded by a history of trauma. She started seriously studying herbal medicine in 2010 and finds that it pairs very nicely with the nursing approach.

Cole Lea grew up in a large working class family with her bare feet both on the rolling green hills of Pittsburgh and the Appalachian trail in south central Pennsylvania. She comes from a long line of troublemakers and storytellers! She fell in love with water, words, weeds, mountains, mud, and music at a very young age. She has worked in the environmental movement since 2001 training countless agitators and community organizers fighting for environmental justice and the human right to water.

Cole started seriously studying plants in 2003. She has helped hundreds of women learn about and use plant medicine at festivals across the country. In 2008 during her Saturn return she moved thousands of miles to the Bay Area and began studying at the Ohlone Center in 2009.

She is excited about helping people take their health and wellness into their own hands and hearts. She is passionate about working with what she feels are herbally underserved populations of lesbians, queer women and lgbt youth as well as people living with experiences typically diagnosed or labeled as psychiatric conditions.

In her spare time you will find her camping, visiting with friendly plants or people, writing poems, listening to live music, hiking, or staring at the moon.

She started out heading towards a Physical Therapy degree, wanting to heal people through exercise,
massage and movement. After graduating with a Degree in Kinesiology, the study of human movement,
she worked in the Physical Therapy field with people with sports and orthopedic injuries and then with
children with disabilities. Over the years she felt that just treating the muscles and joints often fell
short of helping the whole person. In working with herself she fell back on her old friends and allies,
herbs. Herbs helped treat her mind, body and spirit. With some inner soul searching she realized that
her passion truly was with herbal medicine. She enrolled at Ohlone Herbal Center in 2009 and has
completed the Foundations of Herbalism, the Therapeutic Herbalism Program and is now in the Clinical
Internship working as a Clinical Herbalist at Ohlone Herbal Clinic.

She aspires to help people to find their way toward health and balance with herbal blends, herbal
honeys and candies, tinctures and capsules, nutritional advice and positive supportive energy. Her
belief is that herbs are a gift on earth to help us all to have stronger immune systems, optimal digestive
and endocrine systems and peaceful spirits. She also can assist you with exercises for physical injuries as
well.

She received a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies from UC Santa Barbara. Tired and weary of politics, profit-before-people, and bandage solutions, she turned to holistic methods to make dramatic shifts in her own health. She believes that each person is a unique individual with unique needs. Elizabeth’s goal is to make herbal medicine more conspicuous and more available to the average American. She also hopes to revolutionize our antiquated views of mental illness and make her own personal contribution to the field of mental health.

Kerry Hughes, M.Sc., is an Herbalist and Ethnobotanist who has long-worked in deepening the relationship between plants and people. She believes plants hold specific medicinal, nutritional and spiritual properties that we crave in order to create a life for ourselves that is worth living. It is from this philosophy she builds an herbal practice.

Kerry has spent the past couple decades studying the multiple uses of plants, and in this time has authored several books: The Incense Bible, The Health Professionals Guide to Dietary Supplements, Botanical Medicines: The Desk Reference for Major Herbal Supplements. Through her consulting company, Ethnopharm, she has worked with multiple agencies—such as The United Nations, US-AID, The World Wildlife Foundation (WWF), and PromPeru—in order to promote benefit share, and market access as a way to value traditional knowledge, promote biodiversity, and help enrich lives and provide income to rural people. She continues to focus on the interface between the private and public sectors in the market development of botanicals worldwide, and has a focus on fair trade through her Direction of the IMO-US office. Kerry brings the depth of her experience in ethnobotany to her herbal clients who wish to increase their own health and vibrancy through the integration of herbs in their lives.

Katie grew up in a small coastal town of 2,200 in Maine and spent the first 18 years of her life falling in love with the rocky coast and marveling at the transformations of the four seasons. She obtained her B.S. in Plant Sciences at the University of Connecticut after becoming discouraged by her pharmacy studies; she wanted to help people, not aid in the market of blind pill-pushing. After graduating, a spontaneous move across the country to California ensued, landing her in the Bay Area. While trying to figure out future plans, herbal medicine emerged as the answer to her desire to help people truly find health and happiness in this hectic world while allowing her to maintain the connection with nature that had always held so much importance. It took a long time to put all the pieces together, but she feels she has finally started settling into what she is meant to do.

She has completed the Herbal Intensive Apprenticeship course at Ohlone and is now gaining clinical experience in the school’s student-run clinic. She has always loved working with people and is excited to begin working with clients independently in the future. She is currently dabbling with creating homemade herbal products that may be easily integrated into modern lifestyles. Katie’s goal is to bridge the gap between the average person and herbal medicine. Herbal medicine is able to offer simple solutions to help support people as they move through the modern world and all it has to present.
